Recent Abstractions 2008 - 2010
In the last 4 years whilst living in Brighton I have photographed architecture that interested me around the Brighton and Hove area. This accumulated in an exhibition at Brighton Museum November 2008 – February 2009. I have also spent every holiday driving back to Wales to photograph ruined mansions and the landscape and ruins of Ceredigion. Also throughout this period I have continued to photograph my most personal of subject matter, abstractions. Below is a selection of the most successful abstractions taken over the last four years. They are, as ever, in response to the work of Aaron Siskind and also, to a lesser degree, Siskind’s close friend, Harry Callahan. Aaron Siskind began photographing abstractions in the mid 1940’s until his death in 1991. He worked alongside many of the great Abstract Expressionist painters in America in the 1950’s and also with his friend and fellow photographer Harry Callahan.__________________________________________________________________

Siskind On Callahan
He thinks I'm a brain, which I am not.He thinks he's a dummy, which he is not.
He's very smart.
It's hard to tell why two people get along.
The things that fascinates us it that we can't figure each other out.
It's the intangible in the relationship.
We believe in making pictures.
We've stuck it out all these years.
Now that looms very large.

The moon tonight fills the Earth
With real possibilities
The weight of infatuation and poor judgement
Hangs in yester-nights heavy dimness
And clouds the day after day after next
The moon tonight fills the Earth
With real possibilities
And all I could hear was Nellie Lurcher singing:
‘Hurry on down to the house, Baby
Ain’t nobody home but me’
If I might get all that I came for
Then I may forego an extra go
Miss the chance to climb the ladder
From all the hissing snakes and slow
Worms that lay baked
On the roads un-mobile homes
Baked then bleached by the sun that falls
Upon all it falls upon and owns
Yet the moon tonight fills the Earth
With real possibilities
And all I could hear was Nellie Lurcher singing:
‘Hurry on down to the house, Baby
Ain’t nobody home but me’
